Trial by fire

October 25, 2011

I’m sure many of you have been waiting for this post (especially if you’re my Facebook friend). 🙂

I had the extreme pleasure of attending a wedding Saturday as a second shooter (aka photographer). It was one of those things that fell into my lap at the last minute – and I’m so happy it did.

It’s not my place to blog about a wedding where I don’t really know the couple, so I’m going to steer clear of that. Rest assured, though, the bride was gorgeous; the groom was handsome; the ceremony was flawless; the reception hall was beautiful, and I believe a good time was had by all.

Instead, I want to take the opportunity to reflect on the things I learned about myself, my capabilities with a camera, and wedding photography in general.

I still (and always will) have a lot to learn. A lot, a lot, a lot! But …

I’m now even more eager to learn

As I stared at the ceiling during a 3 a.m. sleepless spell, I actually decided to ask if I could get some constructive criticism on my pictures. I WANT to know what I can do to improve. I WANT to know what is technically wrong with my photos. Heck, I even want suggestions for developing a better eye. Bring it on, I say!

I need to shoot less and think more right now

I took SO many shitty pictures because I had no clue what I was doing. Wait. Scratch that. I kind of knew what I was doing, but I let the “OMG! Look what’s happening! Quick, take as many pictures as you can!” mentality take over. If I had just stopped to take a breath and think about the things I could do to make a good exposure (change ISO/aperture/shutter, etc.), I would have been better off. Another perfect example of shoot less, think more was my lens choice. For the majority of the reception, I used a fixed lens that required me to be further away to get both people in my picture. I was frustrated because I would run into walls or whatever trying to backup. It wasn’t until 3 a.m. it dawned on me, “Lindsay, you dummy! Why didn’t you just change lenses?” DUHHHH! Fail.

I hate flash, but only because I don’t understand it

How does the flash work with my camera settings? Which way should my flash be pointed and when? Ugh! Totally an Achilles heel! But, that’s why I decided to take the Advanced Photojournalism class in the spring. It focuses specifically on lighting. I’m hoping with a solid foundation in light I can better learn flash.

Weddings aren’t just fast paced for the bride and groom

Holy cow did the day fly by! I had no sense of time on our wedding day, but you really don’t have that luxury as a worker bee.

I don’t aspire to be a wedding photographer, but I’d love to have more opportunities to second shoot.

I had an amazing time Saturday. I was overwhelmed, yes, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying myself. Toward the end of the night, I made sure to say thank you for the opportunity … and I got choked up. Sure, some of it might have to do with hormones (I’m a woman; get over it), but not all of it. It really was a great day.

There you have it. 😀

And because posts are boring without pictures, her’s my new favorite. Taken today after work …

Gone but not forgotten

October 19, 2011

Hello friends!

I know I’ve been away far too long, but work and taking pictures and work and marriage and taking pictures and work have been eating away at my blogging time.

Two weekends ago I thought I might have a nervous breakdown. I ended up at Urgent Care Friday evening because I was so consumed with anxiety. Sad but true story.

In hindsight, I know what played into my problems … I spent two years focusing solely on “work” (meaning saving money, wedding planning, etc.) that I forgot how to have fun. Then, all of a sudden, football season arrived and I went ape shit. In other words, the pendulum went from one extreme to the other.

After taking a few days to do absolutely nothing, I think I’m balanced again. I hope. 😛

But, I have good news.

My class is over next week (*sniff*) which means it’ll be time to focus on a new project. One, when I started reading Weddingbee, I knew I couldn’t wait to do …

Official wedding recaps!

I have in my possession watermarked versions of our wedding pics. I plan on taking some time to “organize and group” my thoughts and pictures (totally Type A, I know), but I’m SUPER excited to re-live the day (again).

Hope you’ll join me!

In the meantime, here are some of my favorite pictures I took during the last month:
